chapters 1-4

Literal Sense
Well a young boy by the name of Oliver is introduced. Oliver was born into a sad world, for when he was born his mother passed away. Since she wasn't married and back then the wellbeing of a child depends on social status, he was taken from workhouse to workhouse. In each one, he was tortured a little bit more. The children were treated like prisoners and were starved. Oliver never knew the comfort of a home or the warmth of a family.

Emotional Triggers
When I read this it really hurt me and reminded me of my experiences when visiting Mexico. There was a family with about four little kids and they were sooo poor. The kids ran around in the same dirty worn down clothes every day. It really got to me because I tried to help these kids out by buying them a bag of chips or anything really.

Intellectual Curiosity
How can someone see a hungry child and deny them food? that's so mean.

Writer's Craft
The writer wanted us to sympathize with Oliver and to really get a sense of just how important social statuses were back in the day.
